Chief Walking Turtle
(1736-1833)
Warriors Citation
Born near present-day Green bay, Wisconsin, Nawkaw rallied significant numbers of Winnebagos to the British cause in the War
of 1812, in which he fought with Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames.
After that war ended, he made peace with white immigrants, signing several treaties, as he refused Black Hawk's call to war
in 1832. He also helped negotiate peace between immigrants and Red Bird's followers. From: historical accounts & records
