Chief Pawnee Killer
Warriors Citation
As his name indicates, Pawnee Killer was known for his exploits against the Pawnees, traditional enemies of the Lakota. With
the arrival of white immigrants, the Pawnees often acted as scouts for the U.S. Army as it sought to destroy Sioux power.
Pawnee Killer was one of a number of Lakota who migrated southward from the Dakota country into the Platte River valley of
Colorado and Nebraska during the 1850s, at the beginning of the Plains Native American wars.
Pawnee Killer became an ally of Tall Bull and other Southern Cheyennes in battles with the invading whites. At one point,
he played a role with the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers in routing George Armstrong Custer at the Little Bighorn. Pawnee Killer also
took part in the 1868 Battle of Beecher's Island, during which the Southern Cheyenne chief Roman Nose was killed. Very little
is known of Pawnee Killer after his band settled at Red Cloud Agency in Nebraska. From: historical accounts & records
